The transtasman bond has become a wee bit tighter following last week's big earthquake in Fiordland. The quake last Wednesday night was the largest to strike the country in 80 years. The 7.8 magnitude quake which was centred in Fiordland appears to have twisted the South Island out of shape, moving it closer to Australia. According to the Land Information's New Zealand-GeoNet global positioning system, Fiordland town Te Anau is now 100 millimetres closer to Australia. The South Island's southwest tip Puysegur Point is 300 millimetres closer.

New Zealand's Milford Sound has been nominated to compete for a spot on a list of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Over 260 natural landmarks were nominated from people around the world. Experts chose the final 26 from the 77 landmarks with the most votes. The list will be reduced to a final seven in 2011.

Customers and employees of businesses in the Albany Basin will soon be able to assess traffic delays before choosing whether to set off - thanks to webcams aimed at seven main entry and exit points. Congested roads serving the huge industrial estate have long been a frustration at peak times. Yesterday, approval to install the cameras was given to the North Harbour Business Association, which serves 1300 businesses, which, in turn, employ 13,000 people.

A jury has found former Otago University tutor Clayton Weatherston guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend Sophie Elliott. The jury returned its verdict at the High Court in Christchurch about 11.20am. Weatherston, 33, was charged with the murder of Ms Elliott, 22, in Dunedin on January 9 last year. Weatherston accepted he was guilty of manslaughter, but denied the charge of murder.
Woman's refuge described the trial as a "national disgrace" which gave Weatherston the opportunity to persecute Miss Elliott and her family after her death. "This trial turned justice inside out - the killer became the victim and Sophie Elliot was portrayed to us all as he chose to describe her," chief executive Heather Henare said after the verdict. "Unfortunately for Clayton Weatherston, the jury didn't buy it and nor did the hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders who watched him giggling on their televisions."

SIDESWIPPING IT...
A reader writes: "I was reading a book in the departure lounge at Phoenix Sky Harbour Airport when the PA burst into life (names changed to protect the innocent): 'Laura Kelly, paging passenger Laura Kelly, please contact your hotel. You have left your pyjamas behind.' Smiles exchanged between passengers. Twenty minutes later: 'Laura Kelly, paging passenger Laura Kelly, it's okay, your mother has picked up your pyjamas.' The feeling of relief throughout the terminal was palpable ..."

AUCKLAND FORECAST TODAY
After midnight yet again so we have to write this one.
It was a nice day today, sunny with no rain (well not out west) and one point it looked like it was going to rain, but it was just a threat.
Oh and there was some thunder & lighting late last night.
