Police have shot an armed man in the Auckland suburb of Pt Chevalier. Police say the man was armed with a meat cleaver and two other knives when he advanced on police who were observing him while waiting for the Armed Offenders Squad to attend. Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said this afternoon that he had been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting at 1pm. The 36-year-old - believed to be actor Rob Mokoraka - is now in a stable condition at Auckland Hospital after he was shot. Rob Mokaraka's agent refused to speak about him tonight, telling the Herald they first had to speak to their client.

Aftershocks continue to jolt the Fiordland region following the massive quake two weeks ago. A 4.8 magnitude quake was recorded at 7.37am today, GNS Science reported. It was centred 100km west of Tuatapere, 87km west of Invercargill, and was 12km deep. A series of aftershocks have been shaking the region following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on July 15. The tremor was the largest recorded in the world this year, but because of its remote location, caused very little damage.

Police are baffled by the discovery of several litres of blood in a central Hamilton street. Police said they were called to the "bloody mess" at Anglesea Street early on Saturday morning. The blood appeared to have been dropped from a plastic bag off the seventh floor of a nearby carpark building, police said today. They were investigating whether a man who walked past the scene carrying three stainless steel soap dispensers, similar to those used in public toilets, had anything to do with the blood.

Auckland Harbour Bridge has been left off a list of highway upgrades needed to cope with heavier trucks, despite a report last year warning of a need for further strengthening.

Parkour has hit the streets of central Auckland. Its agile players use concrete steps, park benches and even rubbish bins as gym equipment for their leaps, vaults, drops and somersaults. Parkour has sprung from the suburbs of Paris to a world-wide following glamorised by films of participants leaping from building to building. Less-dangerous but thrilling moves were executed by a score of youthful Aucklanders yesterday in a demonstration on the hard concrete structures of Aotea Square. "It's about trying to find your way around your environment using your body," said sixteen-year-old Levon Baird of Takapuna. "You can do it anywhere."

SIDESWIPPING IT...
A quick romp in a bush during a storm ended when a bolt of lightning struck the ground nearby, making the earth really move for a love-making couple. The couple in western Germany had parked next to a busy motorway, progressing to the nearby bushes for more privacy. They stripped naked and were so carried away that they didn't stop - until a bolt of lightning struck the ground nearby. The terrified pair ran out of the bush naked, lost their way and were spotted blundering around in the dark by another motorist, who called the police. (Source: Metro.co.uk)
