Sunday...the day of rest!
This evening Maz & Russell popped into Ginger Minx (I know we can't stay away from that place...YOUR FAULT). It was meant to be a quick visit and then we were going to go to the movies, but at about 8pm Maz gave up on the idea of movies and bought another drink.
Most random thing, we rocked up there and sat down with Andy Beck & Nikki and Nikki was telling us about the group in the bay area. Well about 30mins later one of them spotted me...it was the second unit crew from Legend of the Seeker, they were there for the birthday of the 1st A.D.
Was good, got to talk to a few of them, one of the A.D's bought Maz a drink and she recieved some feedback on her portfolio. It was also a good Sunday for Minx (it's normally quite) and since most of the crew live local they are going to come back to Minx now they know it's there.
An Auckland polytechnic will be offering an NZQA-accredited DJ course next year to match demand from students wanting to be part of the electronic music scene. The Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (Mainz), a division of the West Coast's Tai Poutini Polytechnic, has developed a Certificate in DJ and Electronic Music Production (Cert DJEMP) to be studied full-time for one year. Whitireia Polytechnic in Porirua already runs a popular DJ programme, and Mainz has experienced growing demand for its short DJ course run as part of its adult community education programme. Mainz director Harry Lyon said it was possible for DJs to make good money and to travel but they often had to accept a "portfolio career" of commercial work to help pay for the creative work. The DJ certificate will teach students business and other "transferable skills" as well as DJ-ing and using up-to-the-minute technology. Mr Lyon said students might go on to use their skills to write soundtracks for documentaries, films and commercials, or go on to audio-engineering.
Gadget-hungry men are in for a tough year, with the annual Big Boys Toys exhibition becoming another victim of the recession. The annual expo has showcased the latest sports cars, speedboats and super-modern technology for 12 years, but November's event has been cancelled after organisers failed to attract enough top exhibits.
New Zealand's first telethon for 16 years got under way in star-studded fashion last night. Hundreds of people packed the Alinghi Base at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour as the 23-hour Big Night In kicked off. Singers Gin Wigmore and Scribe performed in the first hour, with acts also taking to the stage at live broadcasts in Wellington and Christchurch. By 11pm just over $700,000 had already been donated to the KidsCan StandTall charitable trust, which hopes the event will provide 30,000 children with food, raincoats and shoes.
The head of David Bain's legal team believes his trip is the "best possible way" to do some soul searching. And Michael Reed QC described Bain's journey as his "long-delayed OE". "He needs to sort his life out and get away and decide what he wants to do." Reed plans to meet Bain in London so they can visit the Privy Council "to see where he got justice". Bain was allowed a retrial only after taking his case to the council.
